Chives plants grow to about 1 foot tall and wide and when in bloom produce gorgeous pinkish purple (almost blue), edible flowers. This herb grows abundantly and in mild climates you can harvest fresh chives shoots nearly all year long. Chives are a perfect culinary companion, adding the right amount of oniony flavor to any dish or salad, and especially delightful on tacos and nachos.
Ideal germination temperature for growing chives seeds is 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit. These seeds can be sown in the early spring or early fall. You can get a head start by sowing them indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting into your garden in early spring. Chives may spread rapidly if you let the seeds drop.
