Catnip, also known as ‘Catmint’, is well-known and loved for it’s calming and soothing effects, in both the human and feline world! This mint family plant grows 2-3 feet tall and wide. It may spread itself readily if its seeds are allowed to drop. Catnip’s aromatic minty leaves are used widely for their medicinal properties but can also be used to flavor salads, cooked dishes, and teas.
Catnip is appropriately named and as such a word of warning, if you have outdoor cats in your area, they are sure to find this plant and may attack your lovely catnip. If you plan to grow this herb indoors, make sure to keep it out of reach of your feline friends because they can’t resist!
Catnip seeds require stratification or a cold frame in order to increase the germination. Sow catnip seeds outdoors when a light frost is still possible (this method may increase germination time). Alternatively, begin indoors by placing the seeds in the freezer overnight, then soaking in water for 24 hours, and placing into your growing medium in a sunny location (or under grow lights) that is at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit; harden-off and transplant outdoors after your last frost.
